Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is on the verge of a resolution in the investigation into alleged betting rule violations, and a decision may be imminent. The 23-year-old Italian international is currently under scrutiny by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) concerning illegal gambling activities. Reports from Italy have suggested that he could potentially face a 10-month suspension.
Such a ban would mean Newcastle’s £55 million summer signing would be unavailable for the remainder of the season and, if Italy qualifies, their Euro 2024 campaign.
Eddie Howe was asked about Tonali’s situation after the 1-0 Champions League defeat against Borussia Dortmund at St James’ Park on Wednesday night, in which the midfielder came on as a second-half substitute. Howe stated, “I’ve got no update for you; I’m afraid because I’ve been concentrating on the game. I thought Sandro did well when he came on tonight; I thought he played with real quality and energy. I was delighted with his performance.”
Tonali’s representatives have reportedly been in discussions with Italian authorities this week in an effort to reach a plea bargain in his case. Agent Giuseppe Riso issued a statement last week acknowledging the player’s “gambling addiction,” and Howe has assured the club’s full support.
Nonetheless, an extended absence for Tonali would be a significant loss for Newcastle, affecting their high-value summer signing for a substantial portion of his five-year contract. This situation exacerbates the challenges facing Howe’s squad, which is already dealing with several injuries.
Tonali, who has reportedly admitted to betting on former teams Brescia and Milan to win during his time with them, has made 12 appearances for the club since his arrival, but it remains uncertain if his latest outing will be his last for some time.
