Wigan Warriors have tied down one of their star players long-term after handing them a new five-year deal.
The Cherry and Whites are no strangers to lengthy contracts with Junior Nsemba having recently been locked into a six-year contract, whilst the likes of Bevan French are also tied down until the end of the 2028 season.
They’ve now moved to secure the next piece of their dynasty and that is hooker Brad O’Neill, who the club have now signed to a five-year deal meaning he will remain at the Brick Community Stadium until at least the end of the 2029 season.
O’Neill is just 22 and is already one of the best hookers in Super League. He had already been contracted until the end of 2027 but this new deal locks him in for a further two years, showcasing the faith that Wigan have in him.
Injury cut O’Neill’s 2024 season short with the number nine last playing in July although he is expected to return in around April.
The Warriors confirmed the news of O’Neill’s new deal via a statement, which read: “Wigan Warriors are delighted to reveal that hooker Brad O’Neill has signed a new five-year deal with the club that will see him remain until the end of the 2029 season.”
Aged 22, he’s already accomplished more than what many do in their lifetime playing rugby league and with an expected return for April next year he’ll set about adding to his growing legacy.
Speaking on the deal, O’Neill said: “I’m over the moon to extend my contract at Wigan. I feel like there is still a lot of hard work to be done, and a lot for me still to learn, and I feel my best years are certainly in front of me. I feel that this is the best Club for me to develop, with this group of players, coaching staff and facilities.”
Head Coach Matt Peet said: “When Kris [Radlinski] told me that he and Brad had agreed this deal, I was delighted. It’s a big move for us to secure such an important member of the team for such a length of time.
“I love working with Brad, he is a great example of a Wigan player on and off the field. The fact he has come through our Academy, a lot of our staff will be really proud.”
Radlinski, the club’s Chief Executive who has orchestrated so much of their success, added: “Brad would rank highly both as a player and as an individual in our internal discussions. He has the potential for an outstanding career, with his best years still to come. He embodies the core values we cherish at our club and will play a key role in shaping our culture for many years to come.”
