Nottingham Forest’s January transfer window approaches, and it means some significant decisions.
The Reds shouldn’t require many new players in the offseason after bringing in 13 additions during the summer. The main task will be managing a few departures to reduce Steve Cooper’s team.
Tied into that, Forest has several players whose contracts are due to expire at the end of the season. If the club does not wish to tie those concerned down to fresh terms, January would represent a final opportunity to cash in rather than lose them on free transfers in the summer.
Ola Aina, for example, is among that group and has been superb. Having arrived as a free agent, he represents an excellent bit of business. The club would be wise to get him tied down for longer, as his one-year deal includes future options.
Some of the Reds’ other summer signings have also started to come to the fore. It has taken a bit of time for some players to adapt to English football and get up to speed. Others settled in right away.
Forest has a mix of exciting young players and some experienced pros in the dressing room. There is certainly no shortage of potential as the Reds look to push on in the top flight this season.
Some of their summer additions signed long-term deals; others arrived on shorter terms or on loans. With that in mind, here is when every player’s contract expires. The length of the deal wasn’t always disclosed.
2024: Ethan Horvath, Wayne Hennessey, George Shelvey (option to extend until 2025), Loic Mbe Soh (on loan at Almere City), Scott McKenna, Willy Boly, Felipe, Serge Aurier, Ola Aina (includes future options), Gonzalo Montiel (season-long loan from Sevilla, with the potential to make the move permanent), Nuno Tavares (season-long loan from Arsenal, which includes future options), Harry Arter, Cheikhou Kouyate, Andrey Santos (season-long loan from Chelsea), Chris Wood, and Divock Origi (season-long loan from AC Milan, with an option to make the deal permanent).
2025: Richie Laryea (on loan at Vancouver Whitecaps), Jonathan Panzo (on loan at Cardiff City), Moussa Niakhate (option to extend until 2026), Alex Mighten (on loan at KV Kortrijk), Ryan Yates, and Jonjo Shelvey (on loan at Caykur Rizespor).
2026: Joe Worrall, Omar Richards (on loan at Olympiacos), Neco Williams, Brandon Aguilera, Orel Mangala, Gustavo Scarpa (on loan at Olympiacos), and Callum Hudson-Odoi
2027: Matt Turner, Odysseas Vlachodimos, Morgan Gibbs-White, Taiwo Awoniy
2028:Murillo, Andrew Omobamidele, Nicolas Dominguez, Ibrahim Sangare, and Anthony Elanga
2029: Danilo.
Undisclosed: Harry Toffolo, Lewis O’Brien (on loan at Middlesbrough), Josh Bowler (on loan at Cardiff City), Emmanuel Dennis (on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir), Hwang Ui-jo (on loan at Norwich City), Remo Freuler (on loan at Bologna).
