The football community is mourning the loss of John Simpson, a cherished former footballer and sports reporter, who passed away at the age of 82 in The Orchard Care Home in Tullibody. Known for his lifelong dedication to the sport, John made significant contributions both on and off the field.
A lifelong resident of the Wee County, John’s passion for football began at a young age. He played for several local teams, including Sauchie Juniors and East Stirlingshire, and made a memorable appearance for his boyhood club, Alloa Athletic, as a trialist during the 1964-65 season.
At just 15 years old, John embarked on a career in sports journalism by covering a youth match between Forebraes and Bannockburn High School. His commitment to football continued as he took the helm of the sports section at the Alloa Advertiser, where he became a beloved figure in Clackmannanshire.
Les Snaddon, John’s childhood best friend, paid tribute, saying, “He was a great person. We traveled across England and the Isle of Man for football, and he would do anything for anybody. He will be sorely missed.”
John’s reporting left a lasting impact on local fans, who fondly remember his insightful match reports. Just weeks before his passing, he attended the Alloa Athletic Memorabilia Exhibition, where he reminisced with friends about a lifetime of football.
John Simpson’s funeral service will take place at Sauchie & Coalsnaughton Free Church on Tuesday, September 24, at 10:30 AM. Friends and family are respectfully invited to honor his memory.
John’s legacy as a passionate football supporter and dedicated journalist will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
