Swindon Town manager Michael Flynn seemed somewhat relieved in his post-match interview with the Swindon Advertiser.
Flynn’s side were 4-0 up against Accrington Stanley in the 90th minute of their League Two clash, yet only just scraped over the line following a late comeback from Stanley which would see the game finish 4-3.
Swindon have certainly not made it easy for themselves this season and have completely capitulated at points which has cost them, but this would’ve been extraordinary had they not came back from Accrington with all three points.
Charlie Austin added the Robins’ fourth goal in the 89th minute as Flynn’s side looked to be in cruise control, but the potential over-confidence almost came back to bite them.
In the 92nd minute Korede Adedoyin pulled one back for the hosts, before Brad Hills netted twice, in the 97th and 100th minute and Stanley might be kicking themselves that they did not stage a comeback sooner.
Although Swindon took home all three points, the end result is far from convincing and shows that there are some cracks in focus and consistency within the side.
Robins fans’ heart rates would have no doubt been extremely high in the final moments as they watched their side almost throw three point away. That sentiment was echoed by Flynn in his post-match interview where he proclaimed that his players had “hit the self-destruct button”.
A rather worn-out Flynn would go on to say:
“Football does sometimes defy explanation and I think I would have seen it all if they scored the equaliser right at the en
“It is so typical of us in past games, but you did not see that coming across the 90 minutes, with the way we were and the way we controlled the gam
“They had done all the things we wanted for 92 minutes and then we go and hit the self-destruct butto
“We did everything we could in the last seven minutes to throw away three points .”
The result was however significant for the Robins, as they earned their first three points on the road since August. Flynn highlighted that but also remained bullish that the collapse is something that the players cannot do again.
“Everything we did was great. We were brave on the ball, our recovery runs, crossing, passing, movement off the ball and on the ball, taking our chances even though we missed a few.
“It was an excellent away performance for 90 minutes.”
“We got away with it tonight but there will be times if we do that again that we won’t get away with it. So, we have to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
Writer’s View
It would’ve been one of the results of the night had Accrington Stanley came from four down to rescue a point but Swindon just about managed to get over the line. It is however worrying that the players can lose focus so easily and that has been seen multiple times this season.
Nonetheless it is another three points on the board for Swindon who may now be looking to really make a challenge for a place in the play-offs.
