Lewis Neilson, currently on loan at St Johnstone, remains deeply connected to Dundee United, the club he grew up supporting and where he began his professional career. However, as he prepares for the upcoming Tayside derby, Neilson is focused on helping St Johnstone secure a win, even if it means prolonging Dundee United’s winless streak in the Premiership for another week.
Reflecting on his career move from Dundee United to Hearts, Neilson shared that it was a purely professional decision. He moved to Hearts under the guidance of Robbie Neilson, who had previously promoted him from the under-18s to the first team at Dundee United during a Championship season.
At that time, Neilson wasn’t getting much game time at United, and the club’s situation was less stable compared to now. Despite the controversy surrounding his transfer, Neilson emphasizes that his love for Dundee United remains intact, and his decision was understood and supported by his friends and family.
Neilson fondly recalls making his professional debut for Dundee United and playing his first games at Tannadice, a place that holds significant sentimental value for him. As he returns to Tannadice for the derby, he is looking forward to the challenge and hopes to contribute to a positive result for St Johnstone.
His journey at Dundee United began memorably when he debuted in a 1-1 draw that kicked off St Johnstone’s double-winning season. Though he was nervous and fatigued during that game, it remains an unforgettable experience for him. Initially,
Neilson expected to go on loan during that season but ended up playing 10 to 15 games under then-manager Micky Mellon, which he considers a valuable learning period.
Interestingly, Neilson’s transition from midfield to defense was somewhat accidental. After returning from a significant ankle injury, his coach, Andy Goldie, placed him in defense to regain fitness.
Neilson excelled in the role, and the positional change became permanent. However, he still enjoys playing in midfield when given the opportunity, finding that his experience in the middle of the park enhances his ability to step forward and create plays as a center-half.
