ST Johnstone forward Adama Sidibeh has been fined following a second red card at Tannadice, which could result in a lengthy suspension. The 26-year-old was penalized for retaliating against Dundee United’s Kevin Holt after being controversially booked for a challenge on Will Ferry.
Despite the incident, Perth manager Craig Levein has no intention of instructing Sidibeh to alter his aggressive approach to challenging opposition goalkeepers, even though United boss Jim Goodwin hinted that an earlier clash involving Jack Walton might have warranted a dismissal.
“Adama has apologized for what happened on Saturday and he will be fined,” Levein confirmed. “It’s an age-old scenario—he lost his cool when provoked, and unfortunately, he fell for it.”
Levein emphasized that Sidibeh’s reaction was out of character. “Adama isn’t someone you’d normally see with a short temper in training. What happened on Saturday was uncharacteristic. A few things didn’t go his way, and he was frustrated. He was naive in that moment, and now he’s facing the consequences.”
Addressing the controversial clash with Walton, which Goodwin labeled as “dangerous,” Levein defended his player’s commitment. “Adama’s only focus was on the ball. He’s always fully committed, and that’s exactly what you want from a striker. He only knows one way—going all out. Whether on the field or off, he’s always at full speed.”
Levein stressed that Sidibeh’s aggressive style is not intended to harm opponents but is simply part of his natural game. “He’s not reckless or dirty; he’s just fully committed. We’re not going to tell him to hold back or run at 90%. His pace and power are what make him so effective, and our supporters appreciate his 100% effort every time he’s on the pitch.”
Sidibeh, who has been the subject of transfer speculation, is also in line for his second call-up to the Gambian national team. Levein acknowledged that the ongoing speculation might have impacted the player. “Has all the speculation helped? Maybe not, but it’s out of our control. He’s apologized for losing his temper, and he’ll learn from it. As far as we’re concerned, the matter is closed.”
Levein added that Sidibeh’s involvement with the Gambian national team could be beneficial. “We’re hoping he’ll be selected for The Gambia’s upcoming matches. A couple of weeks away playing for his country might do him some good.
