Player bodycams made their Premier League debut during Saturday lunchtime’s Wolves vs. Tottenham Hotspur match.
Brennan Johnson of Spurs and Max Kilman of Wolves were the first players to don the new gear during their warm-up, providing spectators with the first-ever opportunity to witness a Premier League player’s training in person.
IFAB laws prohibit the use of cameras in competitive matches, but TNT Sports struck a deal with the Premier League to use the technology and introduced the bodycams for their debut, offering the viewer a completely new perspective into footballers’ preparations.
Videos from Johnson’s camera captured the Wales international warming up with his Spurs teammates, practicing passes, conversing with teammates, and listening to coaches’ instructions before returning to the tunnel.
Talks among the TNT pundits, however, left opinions on the application of the new technology divided. Although it’s a fantastic addition for spectators, former Manchester City defender Jolean Lescott said that he wouldn’t have preferred to wear it as a player.
