Although Reading manager Ruben Selles acknowledges he is unsure if goalkeeper Joel Pereira will be well enough to play against Burton Albion on Saturday, he maintains his confidence in backup David Button.
After moving to the league in September, Pereira started the season as Button’s deputy. However, after an illness sidelined Button, Pereira had to wait until March to make his league debut.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper, who has seven League One appearances under his belt and is well-liked by supporters for his cup heroics, was forced off the pitch at halftime of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Barnsley because of a head injury.
This season, Button has made over 40 league starts. At Oakwell, he had a great second half that helped the team earn a point against the Tykes.
Selles described the problem as “a cut in the upper bit of the eye in the first half.” “When we came in, he was looking okay but within five minutes there was a bit of blood in the eye, and we didn’t want to risk so we put David on for the second half.”
Pereira’s availability is still unknown with one week to go until the trip to Burton, but the Spaniard is adamant that whomever is between the posts on Saturday will have his complete faith and trust.
“Hopefully, he will be ready for next week but if not, we know David can do the job.”
There are just two games left in the 2023–2024 season, and the Royals will be safe.
