Rangers are edging closer to the appointment of a new sporting director at Ibrox, according to Ross Pilcher.
Writing on the Sportsynergy website, the journalist reported that a new Gers chief could be appointed within the next two weeks after a “methodical process” has taken place since the previous incumbent Ross Wilson left for Nottingham Forst six months ago.
He has named five candidates that could be in the frame for the role, including Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman, Bournemouth’s technical director Richard Hughes, former Tottenham executive Paul Mitchell, Genk technical director Dimitri de Conde and Atlanta United vice president Carlos Bocanegra.
Experience
It is quite an interesting list of names that has been put together as each of those candidates has plenty of experience behind them in similar roles.
One of the first names that stands out is former Rangers defender Bocoengra, who was a popular figure at Ibrox and has overseen the recruitment of a number of young players at Atlanta, something that would fit in with chairman John Bennett’s plan to buy low and sell high on future additions
Another man who fits the billing on that front is De Conde after he previously worked with Philippe Clement at Genk, where he has overseen a number of big-money sales since taking on the role in 2015.
In terms of the other candidates, Freedman, Hughes, and Mitchell each have experience working within Premier League clubs, so it is clear to see why they have been linked with the job.
It’s so far unclear which way the Gers will decide to go about appointing their new sporting director, but it is certainly long overdue and must be announced soon with the January transfer window in mind.
