Philippe Clement has hinted that Rangers are set to agree a new contract with Ross McCausland.
The Belgian manager was speaking ahead of the Scottish Premiership clash with Aberdeen and after a dramatic fortnight for the highly-rated Northern Ireland international.
And with Ross McCausland’s Rangers contract very much the talk of the press during the international break, Philippe Clement has been clear he expects the winger to sign a new deal.
This comes amid reported interest from the likes of Premier League Brentford and AS Roma in Serie A.
“I have no idea about that,” Clement said of possible suitors.
“That’s always something for the player and his agent. We’re talking with him about a new contract. I have a good feeling around that, but it needs to be on paper first.”
Ross McCausland Rangers contract trust to be repaid?
Expanding on the situation later in the press conference, Philippe Clement hinted the trust of playing Ross McCausland with his Ibrox contract up in the air is part of the reason why he expects a signature.
“I could have treated the situation in a different way and first let him sign a contract before I let him play,” he said. “I didn’t do that because I know how important Glasgow Rangers is for Ross.
“After his game against Livingston and the good performance, he got also the international call. That’s also because he started a game. I think we’re on the right way and I have total trust that it’s going to be a positive story.”
McCausland challenge set
Still only 20-years-old, Ross McCausland impressed in a series of substitute appearances before being handed a first Rangers start against Livingston before the break.
The Rangers Academy graduate was then handed a first Northern Ireland cap during the international fortnight, starting in a 4-0 defeat to Finland in Euro 2024 qualifying.
It’s been a whirlwind of a month or so for the winger who is now firmly in the Rangers squad, with the challenge for Ross McCausland to take his game to the next level.
Heading into the clash with Aberdeen, the young Northern Irish winger will also face competition from a returning international attacker who hasn’t been seen since September.
The challenge is also on Ross McCausland to succeed where other Rangers academy talents have come up short recently.
