The Nashville Predators have secured defenseman Spencer Stastney for the next two seasons, as announced by General Manager Barry Trotz. Stastney has signed a two-year contract valued at $825,000 per season at the NHL level, with the contract structured as a two-way deal for the 2024-25 season and transitioning to a one-way deal for 2025-26.
Stastney, 24, made significant strides during the 2023-24 season, appearing in a career-high 20 games with the Predators. In those games, he contributed four points (2 goals, 2 assists) and maintained an impressive +9 rating, ranking third among the team’s defensemen.
Notably, Stastney scored his first NHL goal on November 24th against the St. Louis Blues. He also gained valuable experience by participating in his first three Stanley Cup Playoff games during Nashville’s first-round matchup against the Vancouver Canucks.
At the AHL level, Stastney also demonstrated his potential by recording 20 points (5 goals, 15 assists) in 44 games for the Milwaukee Admirals. His standout performances earned him a spot at the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic.
Originally drafted by Nashville in the fifth round (131st overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft, Stastney has accumulated six points (2 goals, 4 assists) with a +14 rating in 28 career NHL games since his debut in the 2022-23 season. His AHL career stats include 33 points (10 goals, 23 assists) in 102 games, along with six points (1 goal, 5 assists) in 26 postseason appearances.
Before turning professional, Stastney had a successful collegiate career at the University of Notre Dame, where he recorded 63 points (16 goals, 47 assists) in 143 games from 2018-22. He received several accolades during his college tenure, including being named to the Second Team All-Big Ten in 2020-21 and the 2019 Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
A native of Mequon, Wisconsin, Stastney has also represented the United States on the international stage. He competed in the 2020 World Junior Championship and earned a silver medal at the 2018 U-18 World Championship. Additionally, he spent two seasons with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program from 2016-18, further solidifying his reputation as a promising young defenseman.
With this new contract, Stastney will continue to develop his game and contribute to the Predators’ defensive core as they look to build a competitive team for the future.
