The Phoenix Suns might be in a rut in the coming years and Chet Holmgren could be the answer to said issues.
Since the arrival of Mat Ishbia, there has been no shortage of aggression in roster moves. They’ve mortgaged their future — most recently shopping their 2031 first-round pick — to win now.
The problem? The Suns are mid-table in the Western Conference and don’t pose a massive title threat right now.
Flipping their current core for draft capital and young talents would undo all their work — though they’d be able to set themselves up for future contention and a reset with their roster.
One 19-year NBA pro and Hall of Fame star believes the team should shop around and try and land Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Paul Pierce is quite overzealous with the pitch, though he thinks the Suns should ship Kevin Durant to his original club in favor of the 22-year-old 7-footer.
“Listen, they ballin’ without Chet, so now you trade him for KD,” Pierce said. “Man, KD’s shown me he can play with anybody; he can fit on any team. Like, he ain’t Bron where you gotta change your whole [expletive] for Bron. KD can plug and play wherever he go.”
This is more angled towards the Thunder landing Durant than the Suns landing Holmgren — though Phoenix would be able to kick off a rebuild in this regard.
It’s hard to imagine Ishbia would lean towards making a move like this given his aggression with his moves and approach.
