Parramatta captain Clint Gutherson’s future with the Eels is under scrutiny after comments from new head coach Jason Ryles have sparked controversy. Fox League reporter James Hooper has labeled Ryles’ remarks as “disrespectful,” particularly regarding his intention to utilize Gutherson in various positions, including lock and hooker, rather than keeping him in his established fullback role.
During his first media appearance since taking over, Ryles outlined a significant reshaping of the Eels roster, with 11 players set to leave, including notable prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard. The Eels have also made high-profile signings, bringing in Dragons star Zac Lomax and promising fullback Isaiah Iongi from the Panthers on a three-year deal starting next season. Despite Ryles’ assurances that Gutherson remains a part of his plans, Hooper argues that shifting the veteran from fullback is a slight against the club captain.
Gutherson, who has battled injuries this season and even played through broken ribs in crucial games, has demonstrated his resilience and commitment to the team. However, Hooper contends that Ryles’ comments suggest the club is effectively pushing him out. He expressed his concerns on NRL 360, stating, “I found it disrespectful and confusing the way Parramatta have addressed that issue. Clint Gutherson is their captain. He won the players’ player award and the coaches’ award. I think Gutho may be gone too because I don’t see how a player at thirty years old, who has spent his entire career as a fullback, would want to transition to a No. 13 or a No. 9.”
Hooper believes the Eels may be attempting to force Gutherson into a decision regarding his future. Rather than having a straightforward conversation about his role, they appear to be suggesting he adapt to a new position, which could lead to his exit from the club. “You can’t have a $900,000 bench player,” he added, indicating that the financial implications of such a move are significant.
This situation opens the door for the St George Illawarra Dragons, with Hooper suggesting they are well-positioned to acquire Gutherson. Although he is under contract until the end of 2025, he will become a free agent on November 1. Both clubs could benefit from an early release, allowing Gutherson to join the Dragons for the upcoming season.
Acquiring a player of Gutherson’s caliber would be a smart move for Dragons coach Shane Flanagan, who has already signed notable talents such as Valentine Holmes and Damien Cook.
