The Oklahoma Sooners are likely about to be victims of one of college football’s biggest issues. They are staring at the face of having a soon-to-be very empty roster compared to what it currently is. I mean, injuries alone have pretty much already emptied it out, but this offseason they could see a huge change.
Usually, every team sees a big change in the offseason, whether it be graduations, players going pro, or nowadays, the transfer portal. And, that even goes for the best teams in college football, let alone a team that went 6-6 on the year, in a year that was very bad from start to finish, and had so many different things turn this season on its head.
The Sooners are going to be starting at the transfer portal soon, and while they need to take advantage of it, and use it to make their roster better, they will certainly lose some players to it, too. And they know that.
“I won’t be surprised with anything, knowing that there are gonna be a few surprises. I expect there to be, and I’m okay with that… We’ll be prepared to respond and fill the gaps where we need to,” head coach Brent Venables said after the loss to the LSU Tigers.
One of the areas that the Sooners need to be active in the transfer portal is depth on the offensive line, and maybe even starting positions. That was a huge issue this year for the crimson and creme. They may also look into getting a quarterback from the transfer portal if they feel like they want more competition in the room for 2025.
As far as losing guys in the portal, I can’t think of any that I can say will for sure transfer. But, there is always the chance that Jackson Arnold will, even though he says he wants to be in Norman, and of course Michael Hawkins as well. Only time will tell.
But first, the Sooners have a bowl game to play.
