Amid the workout, fans and media buzzed with the possibility of a reunion with former star Ben Hunt, who began his NRL career at the Broncos. Hunt, now 34 and currently in the Australian camp for the Pacific Championships, has expressed interest in returning to the Broncos, where he played his best games. Broncos coach Maguire acknowledged the appeal, saying Hunt’s experience and leadership would be an asset to the team if the club can navigate salary-cap and contractual logistics.
“We all know what Ben brings,” said Maguire. “It would be great to have someone of his calibre. We’ll have discussions once he’s finished with his Australia commitments.”
Hunt’s manager is in talks with several clubs, and those negotiations are set to intensify after the Pacific Championships wrap up. While the move isn’t guaranteed, Hunt has described the idea of returning to his roots at Brisbane as having a “certain romance,” having first joined the club at just 12 years old.
Meanwhile, salary-cap management could pose a challenge, especially with the ongoing investigation into five-eighth Ezra Mam. Mam is currently in a rehabilitation facility after allegedly driving unlicensed and under the influence of a prohibited substance. A final decision on his future with the team is pending.
Despite the taxing conditions, Maguire was pleased with the team’s performance during training and optimistic about the upcoming season. Top players like Payne Haas, Selwyn Cobbo, and Brendan Piakura were present, with Maguire noting, “They all gave it everything. It was great to see.”
