Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin became the 16th NHL player to record 1,500 points this evening after picking up an assist on Dylan Strome’s second goal during the Captials’ 5-4 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars.

The 38-year-old has five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 23 games this season and currently leads the Capitals in points. Last season, he registered 42 goals and 75 points and looks to replicate that this season.

Throughout his career, Ovechkin has tallied 827 goals and 673 assists for 1,500 points in 1,370 regular-season games over 19 NHL seasons, all with the Capitals, who selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He captured the Stanley Cup with the Capitals during the 2017-18 season and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP and the Maurice Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer. Ovechkin has won the Richard Trophy a total of nine times. The Russian forward sits second in NHL history in goals and is just 67 away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals.

Ovechkin and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby are the only two active NHL players with 1,500 points. With Crosby sitting at 1,529. Among history, Ovechkin joins the likes of Joe Thornton, Jaromir Jagr, Joe Sakic, Mark Recchi, Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Ron Francis, Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Ray Bourque, Marcel Dionne, Phil Esposito and Gordie Howe to register 1,500 points or more throughout their NHL career.

The Capitals will next play on Saturday as they get ready to take on the Metropolitan Division leaders New York Rangers and Ovechkin continues his pursuit of making NHL history.
