For the second week running, Paul Merson has declared that he would be surprised if Tottenham defeated their Premier League rivals.
Following their 4-1 loss to Chelsea on Monday, which was their first league loss of the season, Ange Postecoglou’s team takes on Wolves on Saturday.
Earlier this week, Merson responded to those who ridiculed him for speculating that Chelsea would defeat Spurs upon Mauricio Pochettino’s return to the team.
The former midfielder for England and Arsenal has now given his explanation for why he believes Wolves will hand Tottenham their second consecutive loss, with Gary O’Neil’s team winning 2-1.
“It will surprise me if Tottenham wins against Wolves on Saturday given their injuries and suspensions,” he stated to Sportskeeda. I noticed that the Spurs have a number of serious injuries.

‘Micky van de Ven is out, and they’ve got Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, who are set to miss a couple of weeks due to suspension. James Maddison is going to be out too, and Richarlison is set to undergo surgery.
‘Ange Postecoglou will be fielding a makeshift backline and they are not going to be the same side that got off to a flying start to the season due to their injuries.’
Van de Ven went off against Chelsea clutching his hamstring, with the Dutchman expected to face an extended spell on the sidelines, though he reportedly won’t need surgery.
Maddison also limped off against Chelsea, while Richarlison has undergone surgery on a pelvic injury.
Despite Spurs’ superb form heading into the clash against Chelsea, Merson, a fan of the Stamford Bridge club, admitted a Tottenham victory would’shock’ him.
‘I’m very confident for Chelsea on Monday night,’ Merson said on Sky Sports. ‘I’ll be shocked if they lose.’
Several fans swiftly mocked the former England star on social media, with one Tottenham supporter writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘When we beat Chelsea, Paul Merson needs to retire as a pundit.’
Biting back with an amusing response after Chelsea’s win, Merson replied, ‘You will have to put up with me for at least 4-1 more years. COYB.’
He also said in a separate post, ‘All those people who called me clueless, I hope your off to bed. COYB.’
