As the festive season approaches, we’re reaching a time whereby clubs start to assess their imminent futures.
Or, to put it more commonly, they hit the panic button and axe their managers.
It seems to be a trait that affects those who look nervously over their shoulders and see the relegation trap-door beckoning.
Already, in the last few days, we’ve witnessed Sheffield United axe Paul Heckingbottom and replaced him with their former gaffer, Chris Wilder.
Also, in the last twenty-four hours, Nottingham Forest, fearful of losing their top-light status, have axed Steve Cooper and are looking to bring in the former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur boss, Nuno Espirito Santo.
It’s hard to not feel sorry for Heckingbottom and Cooper, both of whom have worked wonders to get their, now former, respective clubs into the top-flight of English football.
Looking at the other Premier League clubs who may be fearul of the drop, I reckon Vincent Kompany is safe at Burnley, Sean Dyche likewise at Everton and I’d be surprised if Roy Hodgson were to be axed by Crystal Palace.
Which leaves Luton Town!
Now I’ve purposely left us to last because I believe we are unique when it comes to our managerial status.
Despite our current perilous position, in the Premier League table, my view is that Rob Edwards has one of the safest jobs in English football.
Although he has only been in the Hatters hot-seat for just over a year, he’s become part of the furniture.
In taking us one-step further than Nathan Jones could, Edwards has the utmost respect from the supporters and the Hatters hierarchy are realistic enough to acknowledge how immense the task was/is to keep the club in the Premier League.
Also, the manner in which Rob conducts himself, as displayed at the Vitality Stadium, last Saturday, has only deemed to increase his status with both ourselves and the board.
Now I know that the one thing you can guarantee, in football, when it comes to managers is that they will, one day, be sacked, I’m pretty certain that, whatever the results for the rest of the season, unlike other clubs, the Luton Town hierarchy will NOT be hitting that panic button!
