Fremantle Dockers defender Jordan Clark has admitted he regrets leaving the Geelong Cats, expressing his longing for the atmosphere and fan culture at the club that shaped his AFL career. Despite making significant strides at Fremantle, the 23-year-old has opened up about the challenges of adjusting to a new environment and the things he misses most about his time in Geelong.
Clark, who was drafted by Geelong in 2018 and spent three seasons with the Cats, said that the experience of playing for one of the league’s most storied clubs left a lasting impression on him. “Leaving Geelong Cats was a mistake,” Clark candidly revealed. “The fans were incredible, and the atmosphere at GMHBA Stadium was something special.”
During his time at Geelong, Clark became known for his speed, versatility, and ball-carrying ability. He made an immediate impact in his debut season, playing 18 games and helping the Cats reach the finals. His dynamic style of play endeared him to the fans, and he quickly became a fan favorite.
It wasn’t just Clark’s on-field performances that created a connection with the Geelong faithful; it was the sheer energy of the supporters. “The chants, the passion of the crowd it was incredible,” Clark said. “There’s something about the fans in Geelong that made every matchday feel like a special event.”
The atmosphere at GMHBA Stadium, known for its intimate yet electric vibe, clearly left a mark on Clark. “Running out onto that field, hearing the fans chant your name, it gives you an extra bit of energy, that extra push. I haven’t quite found that same feeling elsewhere.”
Clark credits Geelong’s fanbase for their unwavering support, even in difficult moments. “Whether we were winning or facing a tough game, the Geelong fans were always behind us. That’s one thing I’ll always appreciate they knew how to lift you when you needed it the most.”
In 2021, Clark made the move to Fremantle Dockers in search of more opportunities and a fresh start. He was excited about the challenge, but as time has passed, he now reflects on what he left behind. “Here in Fremantle, yes, the fans are amazing, but they lack what Geelong has,” Clark explained. “It’s hard to put into words, but there’s a unique bond that Geelong has with its players, and I haven’t felt that same connection yet.”
Clark has found success at Fremantle, becoming an integral part of their defensive unit and helping the team build towards the future. But despite this, he admits that the transition hasn’t been as smooth as he hoped. “I’ve learned a lot at Fremantle, and I’m grateful for the opportunities, but a part of me still misses what I had at Geelong.”
When asked about the possibility of returning to the Cats in the future, Clark didn’t shy away from the idea. “Who knows what the future holds? I’ll always have a soft spot for Geelong and their fans. They gave me my start in the AFL, and I’ll always appreciate that.”
For now, Clark remains focused on helping Fremantle achieve success, but his heart still carries fond memories of his time at Geelong. “Geelong will always be a part of me, no matter where I play. The experience, the fans, the chants it’s something I’ll never forget, and I regret leaving that behind.”
As Clark continues his career with the Dockers, fans across the league will undoubtedly keep an eye on the talented defender’s future.
