Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of John Ruddy on a free transfer following his release from Birmingham City.
The goalkeeper, 37, arrives on a one-year deal after playing 44 times for the Blues in the Championship last season. Ruddy has made a total of 551 career appearances across 13 clubs, including Premier League stints with Everton, Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Speaking out on his move, Ruddy said: “This is a massive club and it’s a massive opportunity, so I’m really excited to get started.
“It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. It’s a huge, huge club which is only going one way and to be a part of that, however big or small, is going to be very pleasing and very exciting.”
Manager Eddie Howe added: “I’m pleased to welcome John to Newcastle United. He has a huge amount of experience and adds a level of support and competition that we need.
“As well as his abilities on the pitch, he has a strong mentality and he is a leader, which will only benefit the group. I’m looking forward to him joining us as we prepare for the season ahead.”
Ruddy’s arrival follows the signing of Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest on Sunday. The Greek stopper was part of the deal that saw Elliot Anderson leave Tyneside for Nottingham Forest.
The fact Newcastle have signed two goalkeepers in as many days now leaves major question marks over whether they feel the need to go out and sign Burnley stopper James Trafford for a fee of around £20m.
It is now makes the exit of Martin Dubravka more likely. The Slovakian goalkeeper was knocked out of Euro 2024 by England on Sunday and will now enjoy a holiday before deciding his club future.
