John Brown has revealed what he told “exceptional” Rangers talent Ross McCausland after it was revealed the Ibrox winger had extended his contract with the Gers.
Reports have emerged that the Northern Irish forward has agreed to extend his stay with Rangers until the summer of 2027, despite growing interest from clubs across the Premier League and the rest of Europe
McCausland has impressed in his limited game time in a Rangers shirt and Rangers legend John Brown has shared the message he passed onto the 20-year-old, as he urged the Northern Irishman to improve in the final third.
As quoted by the Daily Record (28 November) he said: “I managed to see him pre-season against Everton and his ability is exceptional, so is his vision.
“So I’ve watched him and he needs to fill out a bit, get more physicality about his frame, but he’s a good prospect.
“I spoke to him about being more clinical, which he did in the second half by scoring a wonder goal. He looks like the type that thrives on the big atmosphere. Playing with good players around about him will help him.”
Currently, McCausland is very much viewed as a young prospect who is ahead of his expected development and impressing much more than was initially expected of him this season and therefore he has been able to avoid any early criticism or scrutiny from supporters.
But once that new contract is signed, McCausland will no longer be a young talent and would instead be viewed as a fully-fledged member of the Rangers side and will be expected to start chipping in more often with goals and assists in the final third.
The 20-year-old showed against Livingston before the international break that he can find the net himself, although his first-half strike at the Tony Macaroni Arena was ruled out, he showed excellent composure to smash in what was a fairly difficult chance.
Philippe Clement likes to use wide players, but he also expects goals to come from players all across his playing squad. The lack of consistent contributions from Rangers’ strikers means wingers especially have to chip in in the final third and if McCausland wants to play consistently under the Belgian, he’ll have to follow Brown’s advice.
