Legendary former Rangers captain Richard Gough has branded the club’s Europa League victory over Real Betis as one of the best in Ibrox history.
The iconic 9IAR skipper – who won every single title during that period of complete domination – is an authority on all things Rangers and his comments will turn a few heads.
This is after Rangers secured their place in the Europa League Last 16 with a stunning 3-2 victory away to Real Betis in Spain.
Igniting the club’s Europa League dream, goals from Abdallah Sima, Cyriel Dessers and Kemar Roofe ensured victory on yet another famous night on the continent for Rangers.
Richard Gough: Rangers win “one of our best ever”
In an official post on Instagram, Rangers shared an image of the club’s players celebrating in the famous Villamarin stadium in Seville at the end of the match.
Commenting on the post, Richard Gough was effusive in his praise but urged the team to quickly shift the focus to Hampden:
“Incredible result from our team. One of our best results ever in Europe I would say. Having to win the game against a team who hadn’t lost in their stadium this year and who drew with Real Madrid four days ago. Congratulations lads, just make sure we take care of Sunday’s job at Hampden.”
When Richard Gough talks, Rangers fans listen, so this is quite the praise indeed from the legendary former Ibrox skipper.
Gers squad earn Europa League credit
One of the club’s most decorated players, Gough knows what it takes to be successful at Rangers with the club’s former captain shifting the focus just like manager Philippe Clement.
It is a sizeable claim to suggest this is one of Rangers’ greatest results in Europe, and by proxy greatest results period, but it’s hard to argue against it.
In recent seasons Rangers fans have gotten used to their team taking huge scalps on the Europa League stage with FC Porto, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig topping the list.
But given Rangers had never beaten Spanish opposition on Spanish soil before the win over Real Betis, suddenly Richard Gough’s comments take on a sense of realism.
As Rangers and Philippe Clement look ahead to the Last 16, the victory definitely has shades of a famous win on that road to Seville.
