Young star Nico Williams will remain at Athletic Bilbao, according to club president Jon Uriarte, despite interest from the Premier League. The 21-year-old reportedly had a £43 million release clause activated by Aston Villa in the summer, but he chose to remain with his old team. Williams is one of Spain’s most exciting possibilities; his brother Inaki has also played his entire career at Bilbao.
The winger has four La Liga assists for Athletic this season after being a member of the Spanish World Cup team last year. Williams, who plays primarily on the right wing, has apparently caught the attention of both Liverpool and Arsenal. Another English contender mentioned is Tottenham Hotspur.
Though he does, obviously, lack the deadly instinct in front of goal, some have seen him as Mohamed Salah’s long-term replacement. Given that Arsenal is rumored to be interested in another wide attacker, Williams would be better suited as Bukayo Saka’s backup.
However, Bilbao president Uriarte has denied rumors that the youthful star, whose contract has eight months left to run, is departing. Williams will remain where he is, according to the club president, in large part due to the commitment of his family.
