Tottenham ace James Maddison has revealed that the free-kick he scored for Aberdeen against Rangers in 2016 is his favourite career goal so far.
The then-teenager made 14 Scottish Premiership appearances on loan with the Dons from Norwich City in the 2016-17 campaign.
Maddison scored a couple of goals, one of which being the curled free-kick late on against the Gers to snatch a 2-1 victory for his side.
In a video shared on Tottenham’s official Twitter page, Maddison was asked to pick out the best goal of his career to date.
“I would probably say the goal that I scored for Aberdeen when I was on loan as an 18 or 19-year-old against Rangers,” he said.
“It was the first time the two sides met in how ever many years since Rangers had to drop down all the leagues, the first year they were back in the Scottish Premiership.
“There was a big rivalry between the two and I scored a last minute free-kick winner, 90th minute, and we won 2-1.
“That one is just a little bit above the rest just because of the whole dynamic and I was only young and that was kind of me putting myself out there so I’ll go with that one.”
Bad memories
Maddison’s goal does stick in the memory – as do all last-minute goals conceded by Rangers, for some reason – as he found the top corner from around 25 yards out.
It was a sublime strike, to be fair, and one that he has replicated a few times over in what has been a successful career south of the border since this loan spell.
That defeat at Pittodrie came seven games into the season, at which point the Gers were seventh in the Scottish Premiership, before recovering somewhat to finish third behind Celtic and Aberdeen.
A lot has changed at Ibrox since then, of course, and Rangers will go into this weekend’s latest showdown with Aberdeen as strong favourites to come away with all three points.
The Dons have some talented players in their ranks, but let’s hope there is no repeat of that match seven years ago when Maddison’s moment of brilliance caught us cold.
