The Swedish hockey center, now playing for the Florida Panthers, opened up about one of the most difficult decisions of his career—leaving the Boston Bruins after a frustrating season where he couldn’t secure a permanent spot. “I failed them,” Boqvist admitted. “Boston was a team that believed in me, and I walked away before I could show them my true potential. It’s one of my biggest regrets, not staying and fighting for my place. I feel like I let them down.”
Boqvist’s career has been a journey of highs and lows. Drafted 36th overall by the New Jersey Devils in 2017, he showed promise early in his career but struggled to cement himself as a key player in the NHL. After several seasons with the Devils, Boqvist was released and signed a one-year, $775,000 deal with the Boston Bruins ahead of the 2023-24 season. He was recalled to the NHL several times but never managed to lock down a consistent spot in the lineup. “It was mentally exhausting,” Boqvist shared. “You’re up one day, down the next. It’s tough to build momentum or prove yourself when you’re constantly moving between leagues.”
Despite the frustrations, Boqvist doesn’t blame the Bruins for his struggles. In fact, he feels immense gratitude toward the organization. “The Bruins gave me opportunities, and I’m thankful for every one of them. I just wish I had stayed longer, fought harder, and repaid their faith in me with better performances. I know I could have done more.”
Now, Boqvist is determined to make the most of his fresh start with the Florida Panthers, the reigning Stanley Cup champions. Signing with the Panthers for the 2024-25 season, Boqvist sees this as a critical point in his career. “I’ve learned from my time in Boston. I’m not the same player or person I was. I’ve grown, and I’m more focused than ever. This is a new chapter, and I’m determined to give my all for my new team.”
