Hartlepool United midfielder Anthony Mancini is resolute in his aim to return stronger and fitter after a frustrating first season plagued by injuries in the North East. The Frenchman, who signed last summer following an impressive trial, initially dazzled fans with his performance, receiving accolades for a match-winning display against Southend.
However, Mancini’s promising start was interrupted by a severe hamstring tear sustained during a visit to Chesterfield, sidelining him for four months. His rushed return on Boxing Day was premature, as he struggled to regain his initial form despite scoring a remarkable long-range goal against Ebbsfleet in January.
His season was further marred by a groin problem that emerged four weeks into his return, and another attempted comeback in March lasted just 13 minutes against Southend before he had to return to France for recovery.
Mancini’s determination remains unshaken, even though he missed the trip to West Auckland Town and faces manager Darren Sarll’s challenge to earn his place in the side. Last season, Mancini often found his way into the starting XI whenever he was fit, but Sarll’s approach emphasizes team sacrifice over individual brilliance.
Despite these challenges, Mancini has begun to prove his adaptability under Sarll’s regime. He scored a penalty against Scarborough and impressed in the match against South Shields, showing that he can meet Sarll’s pressing demands while still delivering moments of quality in possession.
Reflecting on his preparation and recovery, Mancini told the club’s website, “I have been doing a lot of running at home, so I was a bit prepared. We’re training well, we’re training hard. We want to be the best as possible.”
Expressing his joy at being fit again, he added, “It’s nice to be back. I had a bit more time to get fit, I take it as a positive thing. I’m free, I’m free! I’m happy and I’m fit.”
Looking ahead, Mancini’s goal remains unchanged: “The aim is the same as last season, to go up.”
