Halifax Town are keen to land Sunderland midfielder Caden Kelly this summer as their transfer preparations continue, according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon.
The 20-year-old has played a crucial role for Sunderland’s U21s this season and has now attracted the interest of Halifax ahead of the summer transfer window due to the impressive nature of his performances in the North East.
The Irishman has been a regular feature within Sunderland’s youth sides and has made two previous appearances for the club’s first team during his career to date.
However, during the 2023/24 campaign, Kelly made 14 appearances in all competitions as a result of an injury but still managed to contribute 13 goals for the Black Cats. Kelly is currently averaging almost a goal contribution per 90 minutes and provided a hat-trick of assists during a play-off round of 16 matches against Wolves U21s earlier this month.
Journalist Alan Nixon is yet to comment as to whether Kelly’s proposed move to Halifax Town would be a loan or permanent switch. However, despite Kelly’s professional contract running until June 2024, the club confirmed that he had been retained ahead of the new season.
Therefore, Kelly is likely to have had a contract option in his deal that the Black Cats have triggered to retain his services heading into the summer window.
Halifax Town secured their place in the National League play-offs during the 2023/24 campaign but were comfortably beaten by Solihull Moors in the quarter-finals and saw their hard work end in tears.
However, Kelly is a proven player within Sunderland’s U21s and has a small amount of first-team experience which could be a useful asset for Halifax heading into the upcoming National League season. He can also operate in several different positions which would add further versatility to the Halifax attack next season.
