Despite signing Joe Rothwell, Leeds United’s midfield appears weaker than at the start of the transfer window. Last season, Leeds struggled with a lack of goals from midfield, yet the position was strong in terms of depth. Now, losing Archie Gray and Glen Kamara within three weeks has significantly impacted their box-to-box options.
Archie Gray’s sale was necessary for financial compliance, but Glen Kamara’s departure, though the club had insisted on retaining him, resulted from an offer they couldn’t refuse. This has left Leeds with additional positions to strengthen.
Leeds have been linked with Tottenham Hotspur’s Oliver Skipp, but that pursuit seems unlikely to progress as Skipp is not interested in a Championship move. Moreover, Leeds already have Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, who are better suited to playing in front of the back four.
Rothwell’s arrival from Bournemouth does add a goal threat from midfield, but relying solely on him as the number eight is insufficient. Journalist Graham Smyth, on the Inside Elland Road Podcast, noted that Leeds are seeking a more attack-minded midfielder rather than a defensive one like Skipp. Smyth said,
“They are looking for a more eight/10, than a six/eight. Kamara was box-to-box, being mobile, getting up and down, and winning the ball, but his influence flattened out in the final third.”
With limited concrete links, Leeds need a marquee addition to satisfy supporters after losing Kamara and Gray. Nottingham Forest’s Lewis O’Brien has been linked before but may not be an upgrade.
Gabriel Sara from Norwich City could be an ambitious target, though likely too expensive for Leeds as a Championship club. Leeds might find better value searching abroad, where player prices are significantly lower than in England.
Leeds United must act quickly to strengthen their midfield, aiming for a player who can provide the attacking impetus and box-to-box energy they need to compete effectively next season.
