Swansea have confirmed they have accepted a bid for Matt Grimes as he edges closer to joining Coventry.
The midfielder is set to become Frank Lampard’s first signing of the January transfer window.
It is understood the 29-year-old will pen a long-term deal with Coventry.
His current contract in south Wales, which he signed in August 2023, had been due to expire 2027.
Grimes departs the Swans after a decade with the club, having been captain since 2019.
He has already been replaced as skipper by Ben Cabango, with the club announcing his imminent departure in a statement.
In a post on X, Swansea said: “Swansea City has accepted a bid from a Championship club for the transfer of Matt Grimes.
“Following discussions, Matt Grimes expressed his desire to move on, and the club has respected his wishes.”
Since signing in 2015, Grimes has made 333 appearances for Swansea, scoring 16 goals and providing 33 assists.
Those include two strikes in 32 matches this season for Luke Williams’ side.
Grimes could even make his Coventry debut against his old club this weekend.
The two sides meet in the Championship at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The former England under-21 international arrives with the glowing endorsement of his old manager.
Speaking after Grimes scored in a draw at Luton in December, he exclaimed: “The important thing is to never take him for granted, which is easy to do when he is ever-present.”
Williams also added: “He’s an amazing player and an amazing captain and he adds incredible quality.”
The Swans boss further hailed his ‘unbelievable’ skipper by claiming he was ‘in a class of his own’.
Meanwhile, he becomes Lampard’s first signing since becoming Sky Blues boss in November.
The former Chelsea manager has won seven of his 13 matches across all competitions since replacing Mark Robins in the dugout.
