In a significant shakeup at Beaconsfield Town, former Slough Town midfielder Sam Togwell has been appointed interim manager following the departure of Garry Haylock. Togwell, a key figure at Slough with 107 appearances between 2018 and 2021, steps into the role at a critical time for the Southern League Central Division One side. The club is grappling with a challenging run of form, including early exits from the FA Cup and FA Trophy, coupled with a winless streak now stretching to ten games.
The decision to part ways with Haylock, a manager with notable experience at Binfield and Windsor, comes after a difficult start to the season despite some early promise. The club’s statement expressed gratitude for Haylock’s contribution, particularly his work in nurturing young talent. Recent matches have seen several 17 and 18-year-olds stepping up into the first team, showcasing the progression of Beaconsfield’s youth pathway.
However, the club’s directors felt that while long-term development was important, the immediate need was to restore competitiveness at the first-team level. With 90 points still up for grabs this season, the board saw the managerial change as essential to turning the team’s fortunes around.
Togwell, who enjoyed a professional career spanning stints with Crystal Palace, Port Vale, Barnsley, and Chesterfield, is no stranger to stepping into leadership roles. His appointment marks yet another former Slough player making the transition to management, following in the footsteps of his teammate Scott Davies, who has excelled at the Rebels. Jon Underwood, another ex-Slough boss, has also returned to the managerial scene, recently taking charge of Bracknell Town.
The shakeup at Beaconsfield Town adds to an eventful season in the Southern League, with eyes now on Togwell to see if he can reverse the club’s fortunes and guide them back to winning ways.
