Everton defeated West Ham United 1-0 on Sunday, and Alan Shearer chose two Everton players—Onana and Branthwaite—to be his Premier League Team of the Week.
After an outstanding collective effort, Sean Dyche’s players won 1-0 at the London Stadium to make their way back to Merseyside.
Shearer does, however, note that two Everton players in particular stood out: “powerhouse” Amadou Onana and “magnificent” Jarrad Branthwaite.
Again displaying poise beyond his years at the back, Jarrad Branthwaite will soon run out of superlatives to characterize the 21-year-old.
The youthful defender demonstrated his value to this Everton team with an interception early in the second half that set up the offensive that resulted in Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s winning goal.
Shearer was undoubtedly just as thrilled with the center back, stating, “He was magnificent at the back.” Against West Ham, nothing went by him.
Shearer was not the only one impressed by Onana and Branthwaite.
Amadou Onana, who is 22 years old and put up a difficult and mature performance, took home the accolades for his “powerhouse” performance.
The £33 million midfielder controlled play in the middle of the pitch, was combative throughout the match, and showed the leadership traits that the Belgian player appears to be developing.
Shearer’s Team of the Week featured Onana and Branthwaite, with the former Newcastle forward praising Onana for “a real powerhouse performance.” At the center of Everton’s midfield, he set an exemplary example.
The result highlighted the importance of the win as it moved the Toffees up to five points above the bottom three and down to just three points behind the top half of the table.
In fact, a six-point haul out of a potential nine in October ought to provide Sean Dyche’s team some impetus, especially considering that Burnley will be visiting tomorrow night for a League Cup Round of 16 match, and then they have a challenging Premier League match against Brighton.
