While Hunt has expressed his interest in returning to Brisbane, the Broncos face salary cap challenges, with much of their funds committed to stars like Reece Walsh, Payne Haas, Ezra Mam, and Patrick Carrigan. The NRL is expected to require Hunt’s next club to match his previous salary, ruling out a lower-cost deal for the Broncos, who reportedly have only $500,000 left in cap space.
With Mam’s recent accident potentially sidelining him for part of next season, the Broncos may seek salary cap relief to bring in a player like Hunt. However, the Dolphins, with their greater financial flexibility, appear better positioned if it comes to a bidding war. Hunt has made clear his desire to play in Queensland, and the Dolphins’ careful salary cap management in their early NRL seasons gives them an advantage.
Dolphins Keen to Add Hunt to Their Roster
The Dolphins reportedly have $1.3 million in cap space, and incoming coach Kristian Woolf expressed interest in speaking with Hunt. Woolf, preparing Tonga for the Pacific Championship final against Hunt’s Kangaroos, stated he’d welcome a discussion if Hunt is interested. “I am happy with the squad we’ve built at the Dolphins, but Ben Hunt is a class player,” Woolf said.
Hunt, who led the NRL in try assists (34) in 2024, could bring valuable experience to the Dolphins’ roster, particularly as a mentor for young playmaker Isaiya Katoa. The Dolphins also have Kodi Nikorima and Sean O’Sullivan, but Hunt’s presence would elevate their halves rotation and offer additional options at hooker.
Despite his interest in the Broncos, Hunt’s desire for a premiership and Brisbane’s support—including endorsements from coach Michael Maguire and players like Haas and Carrigan—add complexity to his decision.
