Delisted by Collingwood’s Greedy Club: How Brown’s Exit Proved They Needed Him More But He’s Never Going Back

The story of Brown’s departure from Collingwood is one filled with emotion, talent, and a sense of vindication. After being delisted by the club at the conclusion of the 2022 AFL season, many speculated whether his best football years were behind him. However, Brown has not only disproven those doubts but has thrived in a new chapter of his career, one that has cemented his legacy beyond the AFL arena.

From the beginning, Brown had everything Collingwood needed to win the league—he was ready, willing, and fully capable of making a difference. His creativity, football intelligence, and work ethic were unmatched, traits that could have propelled the team to new heights. “I was willing, and I had everything they needed to win the league,” Brown reflected, speaking with both passion and a hint of frustration.

However, it wasn’t to be. Despite showing promise early on, Brown’s time at Collingwood ended under the shadow of change within the club. Both Brown and his brother Tyler failed to cement their spots in the best 22 under new coach Craig McRae. In what can only be described as a shock to many, they were both delisted at the end of the 2022 season. While some may have viewed this as a setback, Brown took the decision in stride, seeing it as a turning point rather than the end of his career.

Brown’s departure was a significant loss for Collingwood, a club that many now argue has struggled creatively on the field since. “I know they missed my presence,” Brown asserted confidently. “With me, we would have won the league that year.” His words reflect both his deep belief in his own abilities and his frustration at what could have been—a championship-winning season. Collingwood, a team that had all the tools for success, chose instead to let go of one of its most creative assets, and Brown has shown since that he was the missing piece they needed.

Rather than wallow in disappointment, Brown embraced the chance to rebuild his career. In 2023, he joined Box Hill for the VFL season, where he quickly became a standout player. His efforts earned him a spot in the VFL Team of the Year, proving that his football journey was far from over. Additionally, Brown re-joined Marcellin in the VAFA, where his leadership and skills further highlighted his enduring quality as a player.

Brown’s 2024 move to Montmorency in the Northern Football Netball League has solidified his place as one of the most versatile and respected footballers outside the AFL. Sharing his time between Montmorency and Box Hill, Brown continues to bring his creative spark to the field, a trait that Collingwood could desperately use today.

Despite his undeniable success post-Collingwood, Brown has made it clear that he has no intentions of returning to the club that once let him go. “I’m not returning to that greedy club,” he stated firmly. His words reflect a deeper sense of pride and self-worth. Brown recognizes that Collingwood’s decision to delist him wasn’t about talent or potential, but rather the result of short-sighted decisions fueled by greed.

Now, with multiple accomplishments under his belt, Brown is content with the path his career has taken. He has become a shining example of resilience, proving that sometimes, being overlooked can lead to even greater opportunities. As for Collingwood, the club is left to reflect on what could have been if they had kept Brown in their ranks. While they may have moved on, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Brown’s creativity and drive are sorely missed.

For Brown, leaving Collingwood was the greatest gain of his life. He has found success, fulfillment, and a place where his talents are truly appreciated. And while Collingwood may come to regret their decision, Brown is moving forward, leaving the past behind and continuing to shine where he is valued the most.
