Darren Lockyer Reveals the True Reason Behind Kevin Walters’ Sacking as Broncos Coach

In a decision that sent shockwaves through the NRL world, Brisbane Broncos head coach Kevin Walters was axed last month despite his long-standing affiliation with the club. Now, footy legend and Broncos board member Darren Lockyer has shed light on the real reason behind the shock dismissal, revealing it was more than just the team’s poor performance.

Walters, a former Broncos player and beloved figure, found himself in the hot seat after a dismal season where the team finished 12th on the ladder. With a roster boasting top-tier players like Reece Walsh, Ezra Mam, Pat Carrigan, and Payne Haas, expectations were sky-high. According to Lockyer, however, the results fell far short.

Lockyer, speaking to *News Corp*, expressed his dismay over the decision but emphasized that it had to be done. “Kevvie is a great bloke, and that’s what makes it so difficult,” Lockyer said. “It’s not pleasant at all when you have to move on a legend of the game.”

In 2023, the Broncos were only minutes away from securing the grand final before a masterclass by Penrith’s Nathan Cleary dashed their hopes. Yet, in 2024, the Broncos’ performance took a significant nosedive. “At the back end of the year, the team fell away significantly,” Lockyer added. “The call was made based on the playing talent at the Broncos, which there is plenty of. Finishing 12th this season with that roster was simply not acceptable.”

Lockyer also highlighted that Walters’ replacement, Michael Maguire, was brought in to reinvigorate the team with a winning mentality. Maguire, a seasoned coach with an impressive resume, signed a three-year deal with the Broncos. His recent coaching triumphs include leading New Zealand to a 30-0 victory over Australia in the Pacific Championship final and winning the State of Origin series with New South Wales this year.

“Michael Maguire has some traits that we feel will complement what the Broncos need,” Lockyer explained, acknowledging the high expectations placed on Maguire as he takes over the reins at Red Hill.

For Walters, the sacking came as a major blow. “Aside from playing here, it has been the greatest thrill and honour of my life to have coached the Broncos,” Walters said in a heartfelt statement. “It’s time for me to step away and spend some quality time with my loved ones, who have supported me all the way.”

Despite the disappointing end to his tenure, Walters expressed gratitude for the opportunity and reflected on the team’s journey from receiving the wooden spoon to reaching last year’s grand final. As the Broncos move forward, all eyes will be on Maguire as he attempts to steer the team to new heights, under the scrutiny of former players like Gorden Tallis and Shane Webcke.

Maguire, 50, remains optimistic and ready for the challenge. “I am a career coach. I love the daily stuff,” he said. “I’ve missed having players around me daily, and I am extremely hungry to win another competition.”

The decision to part ways with Walters has left fans divided, but the Broncos’ leadership is confident that Maguire can bring the success the club desperately needs after a turbulent season.
