Chris Jack has shared an update on Rangers’ plan for the January transfer window, suggesting the Light Blues may target a couple of loan deals.
The Gers spent heavily under Michael Beale this summer in an attempt to build a squad capable of beating Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title, but a number of the new signings at Ibrox have failed to hit the heights required or expected from them.
While Philippe Clement has improved results at Ibrox, the squad remains fairly light on quality. However, Rangers are unlikely to spend heavily in the January transfer window, with Jack suggesting the Light Blues may instead target the loan market.
Writing for the Rangers Review (19 November) the journalist said: “A right-sided attacker who can play in the pockets or on the touchline is required, as is a striker to provide proper backup for Danilo.
“The January market is notoriously difficult to do business in and Rangers did well to recruit Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin earlier this year.
“It would be no surprise to see the bigger portions of the budget saved for the summer, however, and a couple of loan deals may be the best option for Clement as he seeks to haul this side over the finishing line.”
While Rangers fans will be hoping to see some quality additions to their side, they may have to wait until the summer to really see Clement shape this squad in his image as the Light Blues are unlikely to spend too much during the January window.
The January transfer window very rarely sees teams get value for the money that they spend. Player’s values become much higher and teams have to pay a premium to acquire their targets as the selling sides are never keen to lose their biggest stars midway through the campaign.
Rangers currently still have a lot to play between now and the end of the season, with the Light Blues still in the fight for the Scottish Premiership, the Europa League and the Viaplay Cup and it would be a shame if they decided not to try and kick on with some January additions.
Nobody wants the Gers to spend another £20 million on several average players as they did this summer, but Clement has earned the right to make one or two genuine additions of quality to his side, even if it is expensive.
It will be interesting for Rangers fans and neutrals alike to see how the Light Blues approach this transfer window.
