Castleford Tigers rugby league team has secured a £50m exclusive development agreement to redevelop its current Wheldon Road ground into a new foodstore.
Opus Land (North) and Palmer Capital are working with the Super League club in order to gain approval for the scheme, which would help fund a new stadium at Glasshoughton. It is anticipated that the retail-led revamp of the PROBIZ Coliseum will act as a catalyst for further regeneration, and replaces original plans to offload the site to Ben Bailey Homes.
Castleford Tigers chief executive Richard Wright said: “Our business plan has always been to identify the sale and future usage that would provide the greatest financial return to fund the new stadium development. “The revised agreement announced today would enable the club to acquire all the necessary funding to deliver a new stadium the fans deserve, and to build it in a single phase.”
