    Castleford Tigers Rally Behind Ex-Player with Fundraiser as Rugby League Community Unites

    The spirit of the rugby league family has been on show since former Castleford Tigers Ryan Boyle revealed some devastating family news.

     

    Boyle, who can name Castleford Tigers and Salford Red Devils among his former clubs, took to social media in early February to reveal that his wife Katie has been diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumour.

     

    The ex-Ireland international shared the news alongside a GoFundMe aimed at raising funds to allow him to take time away from work to care for Katie during her treatment.

     

    When initially shared on February 2nd, the fundraiser total sat at £25,000 but thanks to the generosity of the rugby league family it now stands at a brilliant £52,712 (at the time of writing).

     

    Boyle has recently reacted to the influx of funds by explaining that he and his wife will look at alternative treatment that is not offered by the NHS to help Katie keep fighting.

     

     

    Now, two of Boyle’s former clubs Castleford Tigers and Salford Red Devils have confirmed that their game against each other will be a Boyle Family Fundraiser.

     

    The two sides play in Round Four on Friday the 7th of March and Castleford Tigers have released a statement explaining that they will make the match a fundraising event for their former player.

     

    Their statement read: “The club were saddened to hear news about Ryan Boyle’s wife, Katie’s stage four brain tumour diagnosis.

     

    “Ryan played for both Castleford and Salford so we have decided to make our Round 4 Salford fixture on Friday 7th March, a fundraiser for Ryan and his family.

     

    “You can donate £1 on every ticket purchased online, or there will be matchday bucket collections around the ground run by the Tigers Academy players.

     

    “We hope we can raise a significant amount of money to support Ryan, Katie and their family at this difficult time.”

     

    Castleford have not been the only rugby league club to show their support though with Boyle’s friend Wayne Godwin recently revealing that Wigan Warriors had been in touch to offer their support.

     

    Godwin took to X to share the news that Wigan CEO Kris Radlinski had sent a signed World Club Challenge shirt, programme and winners medal to auction with the bidding reaching £1,500.

     

    Since then, Godwin has also dyed his hair blonde along with former teammates of Boyle’s, Connor Robinson and Ben Johnston, as rugby league continues to rally around one of their own.
