Calderdale Council has announced that FC Halifax Town and Halifax Panthers are evaluating their options regarding the future of The Shay Stadium, with another meeting scheduled between all parties later this month.
The Shay is expected to be removed from the council’s control by the 2025-26 financial year. The council prefers that both clubs jointly manage the stadium.
However, the stadium’s future is uncertain as no agreements have been finalized.
Councillor Silvia Dacre, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, stated: “Like many councils nationwide, we have faced tough budget decisions due to increasing costs of essential services such as social care.
“To help manage these costs, we had to confirm the disposal of Shay Stadium during our February budget meeting for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
“The stadium’s running costs are significantly over budget because of its age and the maintenance needs of both the stands and the pitch.
“We have been in discussions with the football and rugby clubs about transferring the Shay to one or both of them, with guarantees for both clubs’ use.
“The clubs are considering their options, and we have a further meeting scheduled this month to continue discussions.”
