The Brisbane Broncos’ hopes of signing Ben Hunt have faced a setback, as the Dolphins officially expressed interest in the former St George Illawarra captain, with a prominent Sydney team also emerging as a contender. The Dragons recently announced they’d mutually agreed to end Hunt’s $950,000 contract, despite one year remaining. The 34-year-old, who has openly shared his wish to finish his career in his native Queensland, spent seven years with the Dragons.
The Dolphins made the first official move for Hunt, whose departure has made him one of the most sought-after free agents in the NRL. Dolphins CEO Terry Reader told The Courier Mail that while they hadn’t yet contacted Hunt or his management, they were open to discussions. With a roster including Isaiya Katoa, Kodi Nikorima, and Sean O’Sullivan, the Dolphins are prepared to consider adding Hunt to their lineup.
The Broncos have also been linked to Hunt, but their salary cap restrictions pose a major hurdle. A potential move could hinge on the status of their five-eighth, Ezra Mam, who is dealing with legal issues following a car accident and a failed drug test. Any decision on Mam’s future could impact the Broncos’ options.
Meanwhile, league great Scott Sattler believes Brisbane should target Sharks playmaker Braydon Trindall instead. Speaking on SEN radio, Sattler noted that Trindall, coming off contract soon, would be an ideal long-term successor for Broncos No.7 Adam Reynolds. He praised Trindall’s performance this season, especially in comparison to Dally M Medallist Nicho Hynes.
The Sydney Roosters have also emerged as a strong option for Hunt, with considerable room in their salary cap after recent departures of key players. The Roosters have already signed Chad Townsend for 2025 but need a replacement for the injured Sam Walker for much of next season. Sattler suggested that Hunt would pair well with Walker, offering steady control alongside Walker’s dynamic playmaking when he returns.
