Matty Smith is set to rejoin Wigan Warriors, where he previously made 139 appearances as a halfback between 2012 and 2016, contributing to two Super League Grand Final victories and a Challenge Cup win. During his stint with Wigan, he earned the prestigious Lance Todd Trophy in 2013 and secured a spot in the Super League Dream Team twice.
Following his departure from Wigan, Smith returned to his hometown club, St Helens, and later played for Catalans Dragons, Warrington Wolves (on loan), and Widnes Vikings.
In December 2022, the 37-year-old took on the role of head coach for St Helens Women’s team, guiding them to a second-place finish in the league while also leading them to three consecutive Challenge Cup triumphs. Throughout the 2023 season, Smith worked alongside Paul Wellens as an assistant coach for the first team.
Wigan Warriors Chief Executive Kris Radlinski expressed his excitement about Smith’s return, stating: “Matty has always had an exceptional, innovative rugby league mind. He displayed it effectively during his playing career and has now applied it successfully to coaching. After his great work with the St Helens Women’s team, he is eager to take on a new challenge by working with elite young male players.”
Radlinski added that both he and head coach Matt Peet were impressed by Smith’s enthusiasm for coaching and believe he will be a valuable asset to the club’s performance team.
Peet echoed these sentiments, noting: “Matty was heavily involved in coaching our junior players when he was with us as a player, and his passion for coaching is undeniable. We are thrilled to welcome him back to the club.”
He added: “His leadership over recent seasons has been impressive, and our academy players will benefit greatly under his guidance.”
Reflecting on his new role, Smith said: “The past two years with St Helens Women’s team have been fantastic, and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it as we’ve achieved great success. However, this new opportunity is something I couldn’t pass up. It’s a significant role where I get to work with and nurture the young talent that Wigan Warriors has consistently produced.
“I’m eager to collaborate with coaches across the club, continue my development as a coach, and get started on this exciting journey.”
