Bill Leckie has called the Rangers’ win in the ViaPlay Cup final over Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Sunday 17 December as “embarrassing”.
The Scottish Sun journalist was far from pleased with the quality on show, hours after Derek Adams unleashed on the quality of football in the country.
James Tavernier scored the only goal of the game towards the end of the clash, with a superb finish to make sure the silverware finally returned home to Ibrox.
Writing in his column for the Scottish Sun, Leckie was far from impressed with what he saw across the 90 minutes at Hampden Park.
“Rangers vs. Aberdeen will go down as The Derek Adams Final – it was an embarrassing advert for Scottish football,” he wrote.
“It’ll go down in history as The Derek Adams Final. A day when one man’s damning assessment on the state of Scottish football was held up to the most public of scrutiny.
“Put it this way – the Rangers legions might have been serenading James Tavernier for winning them their first League Cup in 12 years, but any neutrals still watching by the time he struck on 75 minutes must just have been glad that he spared them from extra-time.
“It was that bad.”
Embarrassing?
There is a fine line when looking at games such as this, and Rangers must be left out of that conversation.
Philippe Clement set his side up to take the game to Aberdeen, but when Barry Robson made it very clear that his message was to sit as deep as possible and hope something happens, what can you do?
Despite that, Rangers kept plugging away and got their reward, when in years gone by they may have somehow been stung on the counter-attack or from a set-piece.
Aberdeen did not come to play as they have done previously this season, but when playing against this Light Blues’ side who are brimming with confidence right now, that may have been their only choice.
In a weekend where Celtic lost again, the Bears will now have their eyes set on the Scottish Premiership, with two wins in their games-in-hand enough to put them top now.
With the Old Firm also around the corner, this could soon turn into the perfect month.
