Wolves have been vindicated for their cautious summer transfer window after Everton were docked 10 points for allegedly breaching financial rules.
Throughout a difficult summer, which ultimately saw Julen Lopetegui walk away from his post as head coach, Wolves offloaded around £140million worth of talent which included star names Ruben Neves, Matheus Nunes, Raul Jimenez and Conor Coady.
The club needed to turn a profit in this financial year so they did not breach the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, previously known as FFP.
The rules state a club cannot make more than a £105million loss over a three-year period and after making a £46million loss in 2021/22, Wolves were set to make a loss of around £60million-£80million in 2022/23.
With no precedent for a punishment in the summer, Wolves were extremely cautious and offloaded enough players to bring them in line with the rules.
However, Everton have now been hit with a unprecedented 10 point deduction, which has taken them to 19th in the league and off the foot of the table on goal difference.
Although the Merseyside club are due to appeal the decision, this ruling has justified Wolves’ decision to abide by the rules in the face of supporter backlash.
Wolves will still need to be cautious until the end of the financial year in April, but hope to have some wiggle room for additions in January.
